Dr Reddy’s Plans 7 New Drug Launches In US

Indian drug maker Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd plans to launch about 7 new generics in the United States in 2009/10, but sales at its German unit could drop from a year ago, a senior official said.

The new launches will include blockbuster omeprazole, which the company plans to start selling in the United States by early next quarter, Chief Operating Officer Satish Reddy told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

Omeprazole is a generic version of AstraZeneca’s Prilosec and is indicated for the treatment of stomach ulcers and acid reflux. Dr Reddy’s will be the second generics maker after Perrigo to sell the copycat variant of this drug.

“It’s a steady plan where every year there will be one winning product,” Reddy said.

Global demand for generic drugs from companies such as Dr Reddy’s and local rivals Ranbaxy Laboratories and Cipla is booming as nations around the world battle rising healthcare costs
